Stop Billionaires from Buying Our Elections

This mid-term election season has seen an enormous rise of 30% in campaign expenditures.  A large amount of that money has been donated in secret.  In July 2010, in Citizens United V Federal Election Commission the Supreme Court ruled corporations were people and could not be limited in their contributions to political candidates or in independently advertising for or against an individual candidate.  The court did not require disclosure of the source of the contributions.

The result has been a large increase in money spent on advertising from "mystery" sources many of these donations have been very large all the way up to 1 million dollars at a time.  The Republicans have been the main beneficiary of the flood of new "dark money" which has enabled their candidates to out spend Democrats 10 to 1 sometimes more.  Congressional races that typically have a total of 1 million dollars spent total are seeing that rise to 2 or 3 million dollars all on the Republican side.  This Supreme Court ruling is allowing the very billionaires and large corporations that have ran our country into the ditch the ability to buy our elections.  They spend millions of dollars every year lobbying and now millions on elections, they are not spending billions for no reason and they do not have the prosperity of the United States and American citizens as their goal.  They are only out to expand their bank accounts and corporate balance sheets.

All Americans that want their government to act on their behalf to ensure our security, global competitiveness, environmental concerns and education crisis must begin to speak out about stopping the influence that is being wielded against our interests.  Contact your Congressman and demand legislation to inject transparency through campaign finance disclosure laws, legislation to remove the enormous sums of money from our election system and a Constitutional Amendment that makes it clear that only human beings NOT corporations are considered to be persons in the United States of America!
